For the second straight year the St. Clair Saints women's volleyball team had to settle for OCAA Silver after a heartbreaking defeat in the gold medal match at the OCAA Championship in King City on Saturday night.
In an outstanding back and forth match, the Saints fell 3-2 to the Humber Hawks. St. Clair went up 2-0 with some solid play but the momentum flipped in the third set with the Hawks winning the next three sets to take the match. Set scores for Humber were 22-25, 20-25, 25-14, 25-21, and 15-11.
It was the fifth consecutive Championship for the Hawks while the Saints were seeking their first gold since 1997. With the win, Humber advances to the CCAA National Championship in Manitoba. St. Clair had defeated the Hawks twice during the regular season but couldn't pull off the third upset.
Setter Emma Clements was named the player of the game for the Saints while Kiana Huggins and Brianne Hobbin were named Championship All Stars.
It was an outstanding season for the Saints as they finished with a final record of 17-3, winning the OCAA West Division for the first time since 1997. It was the women's volleyball program's fourth OCAA Medal in the last eight seasons.
