By understanding both the public and personal lives of women, we will begin to discover the diversity of experiences that Canadian women have as well as many of the common themes that they share. This course will encourage students to look at some of the basic concepts used in feminist theory in order to begin to discuss the issues that affect Canadian women's lives. In particular, we will explore how our identities are informed by a complicated process of "social construction" and how that process ends up privileging some people while oppressing others. To understand how social construction is a continuous and active force in our lives we will look at the experiences of a range of women and men through readings, lectures, films, and group discussions.
