A knowledge of both labour economics principles and labour market characteristics is essential for the human resource professional. Labour economics principles explain wage levels, wage differentials, and labour market behaviour. Labour market characteristics influence labour legislation and impact on the labour relations function in the organization. In addition, the human resource manager must be able to interpret labour market data. The objective of this course is to familiarize the student with labour market theory in the areas of wage determination, wage differentials, the impact of unions, and unemployment. The course also reviews relevant Canadian labour market data.
