Student in Wheelchair with Another Student Our Commitment
Disability Services at St. Clair College is committed to providing equal access to educational resources and an optimal learning environment for students with disabilities. We are dedicated to provide support and services to all students with disabilities with valid documentation. Disabilities include physical, medical, learning and/or psychological. Documentation that is required is as follows:

Learning Disability: A psychological assessment (within the last 4 years) displaying average intellectual functioning with a specific processing deficit combined with significantly delayed academic achievement.  The psychologist must include a statement of diagnosis in the report.

Cognitive Impairment: A psychological assessment (within the last 4 years) indicating overall intellectual functioning in the Borderline range (70-79).

ADHD: A statement of diagnosis of the disorder by a qualified professional accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons or a psychological assessment from a registered psychologist or psychological associate who is registered by the College of Psychologists.

Physical: A report or diagnosis from a medical professional who is registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons.  Physical disabilities include: Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Blind/Low Vision, Medical Conditions and Physical Injuries.

Emotional/Psychological: A statement of diagnosis of the disorder by a qualified professional accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons or a psychological assessment from a registered psychologist or psychological associate who is registered by the College of Psychologists.

What is an Accommodation Plan?
An Accommodation Plan is produced by a Counsellor, in conjunction with the student, to provide reasonable and appropriate learning accommodations to support the student in achieving academic success.

Accommodations
Accommodations are chosen which will assist students with disabilities to overcome learning barriers that may exist as a result of a particular disability. These do not, however, represent modifications to the student's program.

These accommodations are based on the recommendations from the physician and/or psychologist's reports. Accommodation Plans identify and address specific areas of concern and outline supports used to “level the playing field”. Accommodations may include: extra time on tests, assistive devices, a note-taker, a distraction free environment, etc.

Accommodation Plans are prepared in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code concerning assistance for students with disabilities.

How to Receive Services
To receive services, students must meet with a Disability Services counsellor and present documentation that provides written verification of the diagnosis. This could include:
  • Medical reports
  • Clinical psychologist report
  • Psychiatric report
  • Educational assessments (Individual Education Plans – IEP, Individual Placement and Review Committee – IPRC)
The student and Counsellor will then develop an appropriate Accommodation Plan which will outline the in-class, instructional, testing, and out-of-class accommodations to be provided by St. Clair College.

SERVICES FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES
Students with learning disabilities may be referred by a Disability Services Counsellor to the Learning Strategist and/or Assistive Technologist for additional support.

Learning Strategist
The role of the Learning Strategist is to develop and deliver learning and study skills to support students with learning disabilities. Through group and individual sessions, they will help students develop strategies and methods for learning which are suitable to their unique needs.
