Industry Demands CNC Programmers/Operators
For months Windsor/Essex County local shops have experienced a shortage of CNC programmers/operators. As our metal cutting industries have diversified from purely automotive products into aerospace and other specialty industries, the need for skilled CNC programmers/operators has increased.

Industry stakeholders including Advantage Engineering, Centerline, Active Burgess and CAMM have all expressed concern over this labour shortage, while their job ads go unanswered. For the third quarter of 2011, we have documented no less than 50+ companies that have advertised for CNC programmers/operators in Windsor/Essex County, Chatham, Kent County and Michigan alone.

St. Clair College has received approval & funding from the Ministry of Training Colleges & Universities to run a Pre-Apprenticeship CNC Precision Metal Cutting Program in 2012. This program was run recently (in 2011) with a 100% work placement success rate! Participants in this program will complete the level 1 General Machinist Apprenticeship in-school Curriculum as well as 70 hrs. of hands on CNC Practical Skills combined with a 12 week industry work placement, all designed to meet anticipated labour shortages and address local industry's specific CNC Operator needs.

The benefits of this placement are two-fold: trainees benefit from real world exposure; industry benefits by reducing the training time for new employees and are paid a wage subsidy to offset training costs.
