Students in St. Clair College’s Nursing and Pharmacy Technician programs will learn first hand the importance of safe medication practices thanks to a $25,000 donation of state-of-the-art medication carts from First Medical Pharmacy in Windsor.
Chair, School of Health Sciences, Gloria Milburn is thrilled with the donation. “Having the right equipment to teach students is critical in this program. These medication carts will significantly reduce the learning curve for graduates when they become independent practitioners within health care organizations. They will actually be able to "hit the ground running,” decreasing the orientation times of their employers.
Rick VanHooren, Manager/ Consultant Pharmacist Long Term Care with First Medical believes strongly in teaching these skills early and that there is no better way to do that than at the source. “Developing a safe medication distribution system to ensure the safety of long term care patients is what we’re all about,” says VanHooren. “I can't think of a better way to do this than to provide the tools to students in the classroom in order that they learn first hand before entering the workforce.”
The $5,000 carts will be put into use immediately in both the Nursing and Pharmacy Technician simulation laboratories. They will help students with a hands on understanding of the safety required in both dispensing and administering medications to patients.
