GREEN CLASSROOM FOR GREEN CORRIDOR PROJECT

Second and third year St. Clair College Interior Design Students collaborated with students and faculty from the University of Windsor on a Green Corridor project initiative to design a green classroom using recycled shipping containers.

St. Clair Professors Bill Rawlings, Sandra Ellis and Patrick Redko, working with their second year Design Studio students and third year Environmental Design students, incorporated the research of students from the University of Windsor's School of Visual Arts interdisciplinary Green Corridor class led by Professor Rod Strickland during the past semester. The second year students developed designs based on using containers to house a future learning space to be used by the Green Corridor group. Third year students used existing proposals developed by the University of Windsor students, and focused on the environmentally sustainable materials and technologies that could be incorporated into their designs based on LEED principles. Some designs incorporated using existing materials from houses slated for demolition from the Indian Road area, water collection systems, grey water use fixtures, energy saving technologies (wind and solar) and the use of sustainable materials.

As part of their final work, the students presented their designs and findings to the University of Windsor professor and students. Green Corridor is a groundbreaking initiative for generating a green redevelopment of the international bridge linking Canada to the United States. As a gateway to the City of Windsor, the corridor presents opportunities to involve local communities in transforming their environment. One of the important focus points of the Green Corridor Project is to bring together St. Clair College and the University of Windsor to help our community raise their awareness on environmental issues.
