Chatham Recipients: President Medal recipient Michelle Laycock and Student Leadership Medal recipient Dale Turner
Academic Award recipients will be honoured for their achievements in academics, leadership and extracurricular activities at the upcoming
Forty-Fourth Annual Convocation Ceremony. Their profiles illustrate how diverse St. Clair College’s student population has become.
Windsor Recipients:
The recipient of the
President’s Medal is a well known community leader who has received numerous community awards over her lifetime. Sandra Stanciu is graduating from the
Tourism & Travel program and is thrilled to hear she is receiving the President’s Medal. “This is such an honour to be chosen for this award,” says Stanciu. “It was a thrill for me to go back to school after forty plus years and to have the opportunity to work with students in a variety of capacities. I learned a lot about an industry that is moving front and centre rapidly in our city and in the province.” Stanciu demonstrated great leadership qualities in the classroom and is described as a selfless and humble individual with energy, creativity, poise and initiative. She implemented the first annual MediaPlex lunch to enhance relationships between the Tourism & Travel and Journalism program that share the space. Stanciu also was instrumental in forming a partnership between the College and the Windsor Essex Community Health Group. She also fostered a strong relationship between the Tourism program and the regional Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island Association.
Rachel Pare received the
Board of Governor’s Award for a three year program. She balanced her studies with a part time job and two young children. “I hope that my going back to school showed my children that you’re never too old to learn,” says Pare. “While it was a challenge, it was well worth it.”
Pare maintained a GPA of 4.0 in all six semesters of the
Business Administration - Human Resources Program while mentoring other students in the class and still found time to be the VP of the HR Club, organizing a fundraiser for their program.
Governor General’s Medal recipient James Wu received his award for the work the
Mechanical Engineering Technology - Automotive Product Design program (APD). He was part of the Research & Development team and made significant contributions to the creation of the new APD Program Research Lab. This lab has enhanced the learning opportunities of classmates and will continue to enhance the opportunities for research experience and project work for students in this program for years to come. Wu actively participated in the Sober Steering Sensors Canada Inc./St. Clair College project and contributed to the development of an automotive active safety system which would prevent drivers who consumed alcohol from operating their vehicles. According to Sober Steering Sensors Canada Inc, the APD R & D team, with this student’s contribution developed “...a very elegant solution to a difficult problem”. Membership on this team demanded irregular scheduling of project work which Wu did while maintaining a 4.00 G.P.A.
Keri Bagley is the recipient of the
Student Leadership Award. She is graduating from the
Police Foundations program and intends to return to the college next year to continue her studies and serve on the student council as a Director. She exhibited impressive leadership ability and excelled academically, winning a OCAA (Ontario College Athletic Association) Ontario Scholar Award for maintaining a 3.0 or greater GPA. Bagley acted as an organizer for numerous campaigns, put countless hours into extracurricular activities on campus, all while serving as a director on the Student Representative Council, and being an active student athlete on the Volleyball team and Fast Ball team, where she was selected as an all star. She also coaches the Windsor Wildcats fastball team.
Camilla Ackroyd also received a
Board of Governor’s Medal for the two year programs. She is graduating from the
Horticulture Technician program. Ackroyd mentored many students above and beyond her peer-tutoring work. She was the Program Representative at Canada Blooms and volunteered and was recognized for outstanding contributions at Landscape Ontario Congress and at Canada Blooms. Ackroyd also participated and excelled in the Skills Canada - Ontario Landscape Gardening competition at Canada Blooms and earned fourth place.
Chatham Recipients:
Michelle Laycock is receiving the
President’s Medal as she graduates from the
Business - Accounting program. Laycock is described as an outstanding individual who has been an active voice for students at Thames Campus. She worked hard to improve the experiences of those around her and in her community. In her role as Executive Vice President Thames Students Inc. Laycock inspired a team of directors and worked with them to establish annual goals and implemented successful strategies to achieve them. She was a student advocate who lobbied to grow Thames Campus as an exemplar of a green community. In her two years in the Business Accounting program she demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, combined with active participation in cross-college activities and strong leadership qualities.
The Student Leadership Award recipient is Dale Turner. He is graduating as an adult student from the
Developmental Services Worker program. Turner excelled academically, was elected as a Director of Student Affairs of Thames Students Inc. and his attitude towards Thames Campus and the value of post-secondary education has been energizing to the students around him. Dale was involved in a variety of activities and initiatives through Student Government such as Orientation and demonstrated his leadership qualities as a student ambassador for the College and as a mentor to students.uired.
