Windsor, ON: Joel Caron, third year graphic design student at St. Clair College is the winner of a poster contest recently held by the Shores of Erie International Wine Festival. The winning design will be the foundation of the Festivals promotional campaign to be launched shortly.
Joel’s winning design was selected by a panel of judges who are part of the Shores of Erie Festival committee and according to Kelly O’Rourke, Festival Administrator, it was a tight competition. “We received 23 entries from the graphic design program at the College and there were some exceptional designs,” says O’Rourke. “The College is one of our strongest partners in this event with help from the Horticulture and Culinary programs. We thought it made sense to engage the graphic design students because we’re aware of the high caliber of work that is done in this program.”
Caron describes his winning entry as a tribute to one of his passions, being a percussionist. “There were certain content requirements including wine or grape imagery as well as musical imagery. I thought about a character with mallets playing rhythm on several wine glasses filled at different levels to produce unique pitches in sound. I guess you could say that this design resonated with the judges.”
According to O’Rourke this design will be seen will be seen everywhere as the Shores of Erie Wine festival starts its promotional campaign. The design will be featured on posters, T shirts and more.
For Caron who is doing his internship at a local graphic design company he is thankful for the opportunity presented through the program. “It is these kinds of real-world experiences that make the graphic design program at the College so powerful. It’s one thing to design for a class project and quite another to design for a client competition. That’s what really challenges you as a designer.”
