The vision statement that hangs at the entrance of the Genesis Entrepreneurship Centre describes precisely what is happening on a monthly basis in Room 128 at the college’s main campus: “Preparing entrepreneurial leaders to create meaningful impact in the community.”
The monthly workshops that are available at no cost to anyone – including St. Clair College students, staff and faculty, as well as members of the larger community – are meant to foster an entrepreneurial spirit that transcends the bottom line.
“We like to say entrepreneurial leaders, not just entrepreneurs, because sometimes people don’t know if they want to start their own business,” says the centre’s supervisor Kevin Hamilton.
“How do we make them better professionals? If they do have their own business, how do we make them better entrepreneurs? How do we make them better student leaders through joining our student clubs?”
Cathy Mombourquette, who oversees programming, said the centre is focused on helping students and others “succeed in whatever path they choose, whether working for themselves or someone else.”
Some of the core workshops are offered on a rotating monthly basis. One, called Basics of Starting a Small Business, helps participants discover how to register their businesses and keep track of finances, while tapping into government support programs and other free services. It will be offered again July 25.
The next workshop will be held Monday, July 8 for Canadian newcomers, who want to learn about income taxes. Participants will learn about Canada’s tax system and why it’s important to file an Income Tax Return.
An Open House for ENACTUS St. Clair will be held Thursday, July 25, between noon and 5 p.m. ENACTUS (Entrepreneurial Action For Others Creates A Better World For Us All) is a global organization which strives to improve standards of living by creating projects focused on the United Nations’ 17 sustainable development goals. Led by academic advisors and business experts, student leaders of ENACTUS create and implement community projects and business ventures in communities coast to coast.
ENACTUS St. Clair is looking to expand its team and has a variety of open positions, from general team members to VP positions.
