(Oshawa, Ontario) – The St. Clair College Men’s Baseball team lost in the gold medal round at the OCAA Provincial Championship Saturday afternoon to Humber College (Etobicoke) by a score of 14-5, bringing home the Silver Medal. The Saints earned their way into the gold medal game after a 5-4 walk-off win over Fanshawe College (London) earlier in the day. This is the first time that St. Clair has not taken home the big prize in the history of OCAA Baseball having won the previous 5 championships in undefeated fashion.
St. Clair jumped ahead 1-0 in the 1st inning over Humber in the gold medal game and then 5-0 headed to the bottom of the 2nd inning. However, Humber rallied for 4 runs in 2nd and another run in the 3rd to the tie the game 5-5 heading to 4th. Saints starter Michael Beale (Windsor, ON/WF Herman) was chased in the 4th inning as Humber went on to score 4 more runs in each of the next two innings and a single in the 6th. Garik Godard (Belle River, ON/Belle River District) and Miguel Cienfuegos (Laval, QC) each had two hits for the Saints in the loss.
In the morning qualifying game St. Clair got a solid start from Micah Harris (Cottam, ON/Essex District) who went 6 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits to go with 6 strikeouts. The Saints held a 4-1 lead heading to the 5th inning but some untimely errors allowed Fanshawe to score a run in the 5th along with 2 more in the 6th to tie the game 4-4 heading to the 7th inning. Godard came on in relief for the win pitching a scoreless 7th to set the stage for the walk-off win. St. Clair loaded the bases and pinch hitter Tommy Cheng (Hong Kong) drew a walk to score the go ahead run.
Godard was named to the Championship All-Star team for his fine play in the tournament and batted 0.571 with 6 RBI’s overall. Kyle Gagnon (Belle River, ON/St. Anne was also named to the All-Star team batting 0.444 in the four championship games.
The Saints can now set their sights on the National Championship being hosted by Humber College in Etobicoke starting Thursday.
