Women's and Men's Soccer Secure Home Playoff Match

(Welland, Ontario) – The St. Clair College women's soccer team improved to 6-2-1 on the season with a 1-0 win over the Niagara College Knights on Saturday afternoon in Welland.

The Saints played well and probably could have won by more but the Niagara keeper made some great saves throughout the match to keep it close. Ryan Morneau (Windsor) got the only St. Clair goal in the 26th minute. The Saints had 19 shot attempts compared to 8 for the Knights. The Niagara goalie made 11 saves while Tory Brown (Windsor) only had to make 1 to earn the clean sheet.

With the win St. Clair is now guaranteed at least 3rd place in the OCAA West Division with 1 regular season game remaining. The Saints can still catch second place Mohawk with a win in their final match. The Saints will take on the 1st place Fanshawe Falcons on Tuesday afternoon in London. Either way the St. Clair women are guaranteed a home playoff game on Sunday, October 22 at the Main Campus Field.

The St. Clair College men's soccer team regular season record moved to to 5-2-2 on the season with a 2-2 draw against the Niagara College Knights on Saturday afternoon in Welland.

The Saints got off to a terrible start in this match going down 2-0 early with goals in the 7th and 12th minute by the Knights. However, St. Clair hung tough and made it 2-1 on a goal by Max Iannetta (LaSalle) in the 23rd minute. The Saints got the equalizer before the end of the half on a breakaway goal by Martin Nyul (Hungary) in the 41st minute. The first half was evenly played with both teams having 8 shot attempts. Niagara pushed hard in the second half which included the Saints playing down a man in for the final 15 minutes. The yellow cards in this match were uneven with St. Clair earning 7 while Niagara had only 1. The Knights had 8 shot attempts compared to 2 for the Saints in the 2nd half. Keeper Shane Beaton (Windsor) was solid in net making a couple big saves in the 2nd half to keep the score tied. Heading into the match Niagara was ranked 3rd in Ontario and 12th in Canada.

With the draw St. Clair is now tied for 2nd place with Niagara in the OCAA West Division with 1 regular season game remaining. The Saints can still take over second place alone with a win in their final match and a Niagara loss or tie. The Saints will take on the 1st place Fanshawe Falcons on Wednesday afternoon in London. Fanshawe is ranked 2nd in Ontario and in 5th in Canada. The Saints tied the Falcons 2-2 on October 7th. Either way the St. Clair men are guaranteed a home playoff game on Sunday, October 22 at the Main Campus Field.
