(Windsor, Ontario) - More than 500 videogamers from across North America packed the St. Clair College SportsPlex this weekend for the first ever ‘Saints Gaming Live’.
The event served as a tryout for Saints Gaming, a competitive eSports team, set to launch in September.
Those in attendance played for scholarships and cash prizes in a number of games including League of Legends, Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Hearthstone, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Street Fighter V.
In addition to the tournament prizing, any incoming St. Clair College student who participated received a $500 tuition bursary for the 2017-18 school year. Saints Gaming is Canada's only officially sanctioned collegiate eSports program.
St. Clair is proud to say $250,000 has been earmarked for the eSports initiative with the hope of developing a scholarship program to support future team members.
