The Amazing Skills Challenge will take place June 3, 9 and 10. The first day of the event took place today (June 2).
"The goal of the event is to increase awareness of various career pathways and to promote the many programs St. Clair College offers," said Laiman Ng, St. Clair College's Student Recruitment and Liaison Coordinator.
Working in partners, the students earn points by fulfilling a number of interactive challenges set up throughout the main campus in Windsor. Some of the various activities include: suiting up in safety gear, like a harness and helmet, and latching on to a pole to experience the Powerline Technician program, performing a live news broadcast to experience the Journalism program, dunking a balloon in liquid nitrogen to experience the Chemical Laboratory Technician program and balancing a tray full of beverages to experience the Hospitality Management program.
Each day about 300 students from the local catholic and public school boards will participate in the activities from about 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Many of the interactive challenges take place in the gymnasium in the college's main building, but several take place at other buildings throughout the main campus.
"More and more, students in the younger grades are being asked to research and think about careers they want to get into," said Ng. "There have been many recent requests from area grade schools to come and tour our campuses, so in order to fulfill these requests efficiently and effectively, the Marketing and Recruitment Department came up with this fun and interactive way to engage these younger students."
First-place winners receive an iPad mini each, and other prizes include gift cards and St. Clair College wear.
