Award Created to Honour Strasser, Jersey Retired at Athletics Banquet
Windsor, ON - St. Clair College President Dr. John Strasser was honoured at the 48th Annual Athletics Awards Banquet held at the Centre for the Arts Wednesday evening.

This is the last year Dr. Strasser will be in his position as President, so an award was created to honour him called the John Albert Strasser Coaches Award. The annual award will be given to the varsity coach whose team achieves success athletically while making significant contributions to the community.

"This award is in recognition of retiring President Dr. John Strasser. We wanted to ensure a trophy bearing his name will become a permanent part of the awards ceremony moving forward," explained Christina Gatto, Director of College Athletics & Sports Development as she introduced the award Wednesday. "Dr. Strasser's philosophy of achieving excellence athletically while being aware of the many needs of our community is deserving of this recognition."

The award was given to Men's Volleyball Coach Rob Lynch. This is the sixth year Lynch has coached the Men's Volleyball team. This year, the team placed 3rd in the West Region and won a Silver Medal at the OCAA Provincials, which is the first ever Men's Volleyball Medal won for St. Clair. The team placed 4th at the CCAA Nationals and won the Durham Invitational Tournament.

Lynch is very involved with community work throughout the year. He and members of his team took part in the Goodfellows Newspaper Drive and raised over $1,000 for local food banks. He's also hosted several clinics at the SportsPlex for high school and grade school volleyball teams. Lynch sat on the organizing committee for the OCAA Men's Volleyball Championships, which St. Clair hosted, and Lynch played a key role in packing the SportsPlex for all three of St. Clair's matches. Lynch also continually goes out of his way to spend extra time with his student-athletes to help them with off the court issues, such as injuries and academic assistance.

Strasser was also honoured with a presentation that retired his hockey jersey.

"The jersey was from our past hockey team and the number 15 signifies Dr. Strasser's 15 years of service," explained Gatto.

"The SportsPlex was Dr. John's vision and now it is our wonderful reality. It's the best in the OCAA. Our scholarships are the best in the OCAA. This is because of him," said Ron Seguin, St. Clair Vice-President, before presenting the jersey to Dr. Strasser. "Since he has been President, the school has won 25 Provincial and National Championships.

So, in recognition of his 15 years of incredible support, we would like to give him this gift of our appreciation."
