RED CROSS WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR

  • The Canadian Red Cross is pleased to announce an exciting change to the age requirement for our Water Safety Instructor course. Effective immediately, the prerequisite age for the Water Safety Instructor course is now 15 years of age.
  • The new WSI Course is designed to provide candidates with the proper knowledge and skills to teach swimming and water safety while promoting water-safe attitudes in, on, and around the water. This course will provide you with instructional knowledge and theories on topics including teaching methods, learning styles, swimming skills, communication, safety supervision, injury prevention, and feedback. The course will include a WSI – Skills Evaluation, WSI – Online, WSI – Teaching Experience, and WSI – Classroom and Pool components.   • Pre-course online work is required is required when the course is condensed into one (1) weekend. You must provide a valid email address on your registration form to be contacted by your instructor. Please bring your bathing suit/towel, notebook/pad, and a pen/pencil to the first class.
  • 100% attendance is required to be eligible for completion.

RED CROSS WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR TRANSFER PROGAM

St. Clair College is currently NOT offering this course.

Please enroll in the New Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course to receive the most comprehensive training.

The Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Transfer course provides current swimming instructors from other training agencies with instructional knowledge and skills specific to the Red Cross Swim Program. These programs may be facilitated in a one-on-one format, or in a group setting. a. Candidate must provide documentation of one of the following current qualifications: Lifesaving Instructor, Lifesaving Swim Instructor, YMCA Instructor, Sears I Can Swim Instructor, American Red Cross Swimming Instructor. Minimum 17 years of age with previous teaching experience.

Note: This process is not designed for candidates who hold an expired Instructor certification from another training agency or do not have prior teaching experience, or for those who hold an Assistant Instructor certification from any of the above agencies. These candidates are directed to Water Safety Instructor Courses.

LIFESAVING SOCIETY LIFESAVING & SWIM INSTRUCTOR

The Lifesaving Instructor Course prepares instructors to teach the Lifesaving Society's:

  • Canadian Swim Patrol Program, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Wading Pool Attendant, Lifesaving Fitness, Distinction, Diploma, Basic and Emergency First Aid, and CPR-A, CPR-B and CPR-C

The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Course prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate:

  • Swimming strokes and related skills found in the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program. Candidates acquire proven teaching methods, planning skills, and a variety of stroke development drills and correction techniques.
  • Prerequisites: 16 years of age by the end of the course; Bronze Cross or NLS certification (need not be current).
  • 100% attendance is required to be eligible for completion.
