SEARS I CAN SWIM PROGRAM
(AGES 6 & UP) This program focuses on swimming progression and stroke refinement which is designed to reward individual accomplishments. Swimmers are introduced to new methods and philosophies that build confidence, skill development, improvement and refinement.
This progressive 3-Stage program teaches swimmers 54 water skills, and focuses on seven major skill progressions including: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, water safety, entries and turns. Swimmers learn to put together whole skill-sets, one step at a time. Stage 4 is the sport module of the I CAN SWIM program. These include I CAN SWIM FAST, I CAN TRIATHLON, I CAN WATERPOLO, I CAN DIVE, I CAN SYNCHRO, and I CAN TEACH.

PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS

I CAN SWIM STAGE
|
If your child . . .
- Is about to embark on their first swimming lesson experience
- Is able to do floats and glides comfortably in the water assisted or unassisted
- Is able to swim on their own or assisted (5m)
- Can only do front paddle
| Stage 1 ORIENTATION TO WATER |
If your child . . .
- Is able to swim in deep water comfortably
- Can adequately perform half a length of freestyle with breathing to the side
- Can do a kneeling or crouched dive
- Has some breaststroke skills
| Stage 2 SKILL DEVELOPMENT |
If your child . . .
- Has been taught freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke
- Can complete 2 lengths (50m) of the pool without stopping
- Is able to scull in both the forward and backward position
| Stage 3 SKILL IMPROVEMENT |
If your child . . .
- Is competent in all 4 swimming strokes; freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly
- Can swim 8 lengths (200m) of the pool without stopping
- Has completed other swimming lesson and is not sure where to go next because of their age

STAGE 1 ORIENTATION TO WATER
This stage involves becoming comfortable in the water. Swimmers establish a sound basis for future acquisition of swimming skills. The orientation process consists of the combination of these five skills:
- Entry and immersion
- Buoyancy and Floatation
- Submersion and Breath Control
- Movement in the water
- Propulsion through the water
Prerequisite: 6 years of age.

STAGE 2 SKILL DEVELOPMENT
This stage develops the skills learned in Stage 1 and introduces basic movements and ability needed for swimming strokes such as arm action, sculling, and breathing. Treading water and basic dives are also covered. The skill development stage consists of the following:
- Streamlining propulsion
- Basic Strokes freestyle, backstroke
- Introduction of breaststroke, basic dolphin movement
- Specific Skills underwater push offs, submersions, and treading water
- Introductory diving skills
Prerequisite: 6 years of age & Stage 1 or equivalent.

STAGE 3 SKILL IMPROVEMENT
This stage builds on skills from Stage 2 and works to improve all four strokes, reaction/ rhythm abilities, and endurance. More advanced dives and basic turns are also covered. Breathing and stroke timing are a major focus. The skill improvement stage consists of the following:
- Stroke Improvement freestyle
- backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly
- Introductory turn skills
- Advanced diving skills
- Endurance Build
Prerequisite: 6 years of age & Stage 2 or equivalent.

STAGE 4a - I Can Swim FAST SKILL REFINEMENT
The focus for the continuing swimmer is skill refinement and stroke enhancement. SEARS I Can Swim FAST provides swimmers with the knowledge and confidence to swim efficiently, effectively and fast. Through stroke drills, endurance building, goal setting and the technical expertise of the SEARS I Can Swim certified teachers, your swimmer will successfully achieve this goal. A variety of teaching methods are introduced to improve young swimmers' efficiency in the water. Swimmers will also learn athletic skills such as goal setting, stretching, nutrition, leadership components, swim sets and how to read pace clocks. Endorsed by Swimming / Natation Canada.
Prerequisite: 8 years of age & Stage 3.

STAGE 4b - I Can Swim FAST
