Please use the following guide to determine the level in which your child should be registered. If your child is between the ages of 3 and 5 years old, register them in the RED CROSS SWIM PRESCHOOL Programs. If your child is 6 years or older, register them in the RED CROSS SWIM KIDS Programs.

Red Cross Swim Preschool - Duck12-24 months of age, participating with a parent or caregiver (assisted)Babies and their caregivers work on rhythmic breathing, moving forward and backward, front and back float with recovery, and shallow water entries and exits.
Red Cross Swim Preschool - SeaTurtle A24-36 months of age, participating with a parent or caregiver (assisted)Toddlers and their caregivers work on submersion, front and back floats and glides, jumping into chest-deep water with assistance, kicking on front and front swim.
Red Cross Swim Preschool - SeaTurtle B3-5 years, participating with a parent or caregiver (assisted)A transitional level where a parent or caregiver participates in the first few lessons building confidence in the student to swim alone with the instructor for the remaining lessons.
Red Cross Swim Preschool - SeaOtter3-5 yearsSwimmers work on front and back floats and glides, kicking on front with a buoyant object, and will be able to swim 1m upon completion of this level.
Red Cross Swim Preschool - Salamander3-5 years, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Preschool Sea OtterSwimmers work on improving their front and back float and jumping into chest-deep water unassisted. Kicking is added to the front and back glide and swimmers will be able to swim 2m upon completion.
Red Cross Swim Preschool - Sunfish3-6 years, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Preschool SalamanderSwimmers work on kicking and can perform glides (front and back), enter deep water safely, float in deep water, swim with a PFD, and swim 5m continuously.
Red Cross Swim Preschool - Crocodile3-6 years, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Preschool SunfishSwimmers further develop the front and back glide with kick, front and back swim, jump into deep water, swim with a PFD in deep water, and swim 10m continuously.
Red Cross Swim Preschool – Whale3-6 years, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Preschool CrocodileSwimmers increase their distance on front and back glide with kick, increase distance on front and back swim, learn the sitting dive, and will be able to swim 15m continuously upon completion of the level.
Red Cross Swim Kids - Level 1At least 5 years of age, no previous swimming experience requiredSwimmers develop front and back float, front and back glide, flutter kick (assisted), shallow water entries and exits, and swim 5m.
Red Cross Swim Kids - Level 2At least 5 years of age, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Swim Kids Level 1Swimmers learn front and back glide with flutter kick, develop front swim, complete deep-water activities (assisted) and swim 10m continuously.
Red Cross Swim Kids - Level 3At least 5 years of age, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Swim Kids Level 2 OR Preschool WhaleSwimmers increase their distance on front and back glide with flutter kick, perform flutter kick unassisted, wear a PFD in deep water, float in deep water, and swim 15m continuously.
Red Cross Swim Kids - Level 4At least 5 years of age, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Swim Kids Level 3Swimmers learn back swim with shoulder roll and front crawl (10m), work on flutter kick on back, perform kneeling dive, introduction to sculling and swim 25m continuously.
Red Cross Swim Kids - Level 5At least 5 years of age, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Swim Kids Level 4Swimmers develop front crawl (15m), learn back crawl (15m) and whip kick on back, learn stride dive and treading water, perform head-first sculling on back, and swim 50m continuously.
Red Cross Swim Kids - Level 6At least 5 years of age, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Swim Kids Level 5Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (25m), learn elementary back stroke (15m), learn dolphin kick, tread water in deep water, perform front dive, and swim 75m continuously.
Red Cross Youth - Swim Kids Level 7At least 5 years of age, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Swim Kids Level 6Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m), learn front scull, perform whip kick on front and dolphin kick, learn stride entry and swim 150m continuously.
Red Cross Youth - Swim Kids Level 8At least 5 years of age, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Swim Kids Level 7Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (75m) and elementary back stroke (25m), learn breast stroke (15m), learn eggbeater/tread water, perform feet-first surface dive and standing shallow dive, and swim 300m continuously.
Red Cross Youth - Swim Kids Level 9At least 5 years of age, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Swim Kids Level 8Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), learn sidestroke kick, perform head-first surface dive, and swim 400m continuously.
Red Cross Youth - Swim Kids Level 10At least 5 years of age, successful completion of the skills in Red Cross Swim Kids Level 9Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (50m), learn sidestroke (25m), perform dolphin kick (vertical), learn feet- and head-first surface dives with underwater swim, and swim 500m continuously.
Red Cross Adult & Teen Swim Basics 1No previous swimming experience required.Swimmers learn front and back float, front and back glide with kick, front swim for 10m, shallow water entries and exits, and deep-water activities (assisted).
Red Cross Adult & Teen Swim Basics 2Some swimming experience and can perform front swim 10m comfortably.Swimmers learn back swim with shoulder roll, front and back crawl (15m), sitting dive, kneeling dive, stride dive and front dive, treading water, and swim a minimum distance of 25m.
Red Cross Adult & Teen Swim StrokesAble to swim front crawl at least 15m continuously, back crawl 15m and is comfortable swimming in deep water.Swimmers choose the stroke(s) they wish to focus on. Participation-based program with individual goals.
Red Cross Adult & Teen Swim SportsIs interested in participating in sports modules and is comfortable moving/swimming in shallow water. If participant cannot swim, is comfortable using flotation support such as a PFD.Swimmers participate in two lessons per sport activity and learn the fundamental skills and techniques of each.

SWIM ASSESSMENTS:
Anyone who is still unsure of what level to register in can be provided with a free swimming assessment during any of our recreational swim times. Please see our public swim times or contact the Lower Deck at 519-972-2715 for additional information.

PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS I CAN SWIM STAGE
If your child . . .
  • Is about to embark on their first swimming lesson experience
  • Is able to do floats and glides comfortably in the water assisted or unassisted
  • Is able to swim on their own or assisted (5m)
  • Can only do front paddle
Stage 1 – ORIENTATION TO WATER
If your child . . .
  • Is able to swim in deep water comfortably
  • Can adequately perform half a length of freestyle with breathing to the side
  • Can do a kneeling or crouched dive
  • Has some breaststroke skills
Stage 2 – SKILL DEVELOPMENT
If your child . . .
  • Has been taught freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke
  • Can complete 2 lengths (50m) of the pool without stopping
  • Is able to scull in both the forward and backward position
Stage 3 – SKILL IMPROVEMENT
If your child . . .
  • Is competent in all 4 swimming strokes; freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly
  • Can swim 8 lengths (200m) of the pool without stopping
  • Has completed other swimming lesson and is not sure where to go next because of their age

REGISTRATION POLICIES:
THE POOL MAY CLOSE AT INOPPORTUNE TIMES DUE TO A FOULING, POWER FAILURE, OR MECHANICAL PROBLEM. WHEN THIS OCCURS, INSTRUCTORS WILL USE THE TIME TO FOCUS ON WATER SAFETY COMPONENTS OF INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS. CANCELLED LESSONS CANNOT BE MADE UP.

Late Registration - may be done up to and including the 2nd class of the course. There are no discounts for late registration.

Appropriate Levels - Your child's instructor may recommend a change in levels if they feel your child is registered in an inappropriate level.  Staff reserve the right to move a child if circumstances dictate.

Transfers - Please note that for safety and consistency reasons we DO NOT transfer swimmers after the 2nd class.

We are not able to make up lessons due to vacations or illness.

Refunds - are accepted on the first week of lessons ONLY with proper documentation.
