Summer Arts Retreat - July 2012

Thames Institute of the Arts is proud to continue its tradition of a SUMMER ARTS RETREAT at Thames Campus. For 2012, this in-depth art experience features a total of 6 daytime courses, each 25 hours in length (5 hours per day, Monday through Friday). The courses and instructors are:

DIGITAL PHOTO ARTIST

Photographer Adam Harpula has designed this course to help the ordinary camera user develop more confidence and skill in the art of digital photography. Course content divides into two equally important areas: 1) Camera - creating familiarity with the camera's technical capabilities and building skill in the use of the instrument to take quality photographs in a wide variety of situations, and 2) Editing - providing step-by-step training and experience in the use of digital software to refine and improve photographs for desired impact. Specific emphasis is placed on how to take and edit better images of family and friends, important moments, nature and landscapes. $141.25 (tuition $125, HST $16.25) (A materials list may also be provided by the instructor before the course begins.)

JEWELLERY EXPLORATION

Goldsmith Amanda Aikens instructs this course for creative students who desire to make their own jewellery. For novice and experienced jewellery makers, this course presents fabrication techniques and design concepts in an exciting class setting where students encourage each other. Skill areas include wire and sheet metal in industrial and precious grades, gemstones, beads, finishes and the importance of personal style and design. Students can use their own materials and equipment in addition to provided resources and tools, resulting in unique personal jewellery creations. $141.25 (tuition $125, HST $16.25) (A materials list may also be provided by the instructor before the course begins.)

DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN

Experienced art instructor Sandra Van Raay develops in each student an awareness of the importance of drawing skills to all forms of art. Students explore the artistic applications of right brain/left brain research. Students improve their ability to define shape, space, line and form through exercises that enhance perception. Students learn to accurately draw what they see, enabling them to pursue future artistic endeavours with confidence. The structure of this course is based on the well-known work Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain by author/artist Betty Edwards. PASSION FOR POTTERY

Experienced potter and mixed-media artist Linda Leigh conducts this course in pottery fundamentals for both novices and those who seek to refresh their understanding of basic pottery techniques. This combination course covers both hand-building and wheel-throwing, and features the use of cone six stoneware agate clays. Participants get to explore a variety of creative approaches to hand-forming. Glaze application is included in course skills. Firing of student pottery creations is done off-site. $209.05 (tuition $185, HST $24.05) (This inclusive instructional fee includes materials and kiln firing provided by the instructor.)

WATERCOLOUR UNLIMITED

Well-known artist-instructor Joyce Hamilton conducts this watercolour course for beginners to experienced artists who want to be more adventurous with watercolour paints. Study includes composition rules, colour theory, psychology of colour and line. An overview of experimental materials and techniques is included to get the creative juices flowing. These topics may include texturing, mixed media, watercolour canvas and unusual paper varietals. Photo references will be used for work on landscapes, still life, florals, perhaps even abstract or cubism. $141.25 (tuition $125, HST $16.25) (A materials list may also be provided by the instructor before the course begins.)
