Used throughout history as studies and finished works of art, the chalk pastel has endurance, retaining its vibrancy through time. In this course you will strengthen your draughtsmanship and engage your imagination with this easy to use medium. This course will introduce you to the medium, enhance your understanding of its potential and allow you freedom to explore its diversity. Compact, chalk pastels are ideal for working in the field, easy to transport, require little clean up, and offer lots of room for progressive styling and application. 3 units of credit. THE ART OF COLLECTED IMAGERY *NEW*
VCA 177
Instructor: Amy Friend
This course is based on hands-on exploration and re-creation of our photographic and personal archives. The re-use, reconstruction, and manipulation of these and other found materials are our main focus. Students will bring photographs, 2-D items or images of interest that they want to transform into new pieces of art. We consider the original intentions of the material and possible ways to create something new, to bring new meaning to the old materials. We will explore the use of both conventional and unconventional materials and methodologies with these personal archives to work on projects that extend beyond traditional means of presenting photo work. This includes but is not limited to painting, writing, tearing, and layering these materials, creating new pieces of art. We will also use a selection of papers to create a book of their work. Students will learn to manipulate their images; considering composition, narrative techniques and assemblage strategies. Basic computer scanning methods and digital techniques are also used for some projects. (Experience is not necessary). This is an excellent course for students who are interested in creating unique keepsakes using their personal archives of photographs, letters, found and collected imagery. 3 units of credit. Total fee: $213.36.

Advanced sewers and experienced quilters may complete a second design during the course. Students must provide their own sewing machine in good working order. A material list will be provided before the course. A stockpile of assorted quilting fabrics is an asset in achieving a bold contemporary quilt or wall hanging.
